Have the freedom and flexibility to fly in less than perfect weather conditions! The Instrument Rating grants you as a Private Pilot the freedom and flexibility to fly in a wider range of weather conditions. You will be trained to fly and navigate using the basic flight instruments paired with the modern avionics equipment like the GPS and auto-pilots without having visual contact with the ground. With an instrument rating not only will your piloting skills be sharpened you will also have the benefits of lower insurance requirement and premiums if you are an aircraft owner. It is also a requirement if you want to pursue a career in flying. The FAA requires a minimum of 50 hours of cross country flight time (10 hours at least in an airplane) with 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, must be 17 years old and able to read, speak, write and understand English. You need to pass the FAA Knowledge Written Test with a minimum score of 70%. When you have met the required flight experience, you need to pass the Practical Test which consists of the oral (ground) and flight portion. Training will consist of ground lessons (preflight and post flight briefings) and in-flight instructions. You will be given topics to study in advance to prepare for the lesson. A syllabus is used to ensure a complete and steady progress in the training. Depending on your flight experience as a private pilot, the hours needed to meet the minimum could be more or less. We estimate the cost to be around $8,000. Some students will require more or less time to complete the program. We strongly recommend that lessons be scheduled at a consistent pace as this greatly affects your learning development.
